Ron Hogg graduated from the University of York in 1973 with a degree in politics and went on to become a teacher of History and Sociology at a comprehensive school in Northamptonshire for six years. In 1978 he joined Northumbria Police, before transferring to Northamptonshire Police in 1981. During his time in Northamptonshire he was promoted to Chief Inspector and spent a year serving on the Police Federation Joint Branch Board.

Ron returned to Northumbria Police in 1992 and spent three years as a Superintendent in Sunderland, during which time he was also Chair of the Superintendents Association for twelve months. Then, between 1996 and 1998 he worked with Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC), being involved in the inspection of a number of Forces and helping to develop a new performance inspection regime.
